Questions about Nightwish

Q: Who/what is Nightwish?

A: Nightwish are a symphonic/melodic metal band with female and male vocals, 4 of the 5 members being from Finland. The current lineup includes: Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards), Emppu Vuorinen (guitars), Marco Hietala (bass/male vocals), Jukka Nevalainen (drums), and Swedish export Anette Olzon (female vocals). Former members include Sami Vanska (bass, 1998-2001) and Tarja Turunen (female vocals, 1996-2005). If you are literally just hearing of Nightwish for the first time via this website, you may download samples of their songs or buy merchandise at their official website.

Q: Where can I find a copy of the book recently written about Nightwish?

A: An English version of Once Upon a Nightwish by Mape Olilla has been published by the company Bazillion Points here in the U.S. and is available there for purchase.

Q: Has Nightwish ever performed in North America, and will they be back?

A: Yes, Nightwish has toured both Canada and Mexico since the early days of their career. However, they did not reach American soil until 2003, headlining the ProgPower music festival in Atlanta, Georgia. The following year the band embarked on their first official U.S. tour. They did not return again until fall 2007, kicking off the Dark Passion Play tour in the U.S. They have since returned three more times, in the spring and fall of '08, and the spring of '09, before wrapping up the tour last September.

Q: Where can I buy Nightwish merchandise in North America?

A: There used to be a time when Nightwish merchandise was scarce in the U.S., but nowadays domestic releases are fairly easy to find. We have a link to the music merchandise store Rockabilia in our Dark Chest of Wonders section; they are not affiliated with OSA and we only link them because many OSAers have used their services and rate them as a top-quality store for finding good Nightwish merchandise.

Q: Is Nightwish a Christian band?

A: There are many Biblical and religious metaphors within the songs, but no bandmember has outwardly proclaimed a Christian agenda within the music.

Q: Can I meet the band?

A: During the U.S. legs of the Dark Passion Play tour, there is an option to obtain VIP passes for an extra fee when purchasing tickets, which means fans can attend a meet-and-greet with the band either before or after the show. But if you cannot afford the extra price for VIP tickets, you can always take a chance of getting to the venue early or staying late after the show in the hopes of running into someone in the band outside the venue. However, this is not a guaranteed method; OSA nor the band themselves condone this as a guaranteed method, so if you want a sure-fire way to meet the bandmembers, your best bet is to purchase VIP tickets.

Q: Where can I go to watch Nightwish videos?

A: Most of the band's videos have been officially released on their DVDs, but for those videos that didn't make it on the DVDs, you can view them on sites such as YouTube. Some Nightwish videos were also premiered recently on the program Movies & Music in the Morning on the Reelz Channel cable television network. So you may be lucky enough to catch their videos there. Of course, it doesn't hurt to pay a visit to the site and make a request!

Q: Are the members of Nightwish married or have children?

A: Personal questions such as this can be answered by reading the bandmember bios on their official site.

Q: I really like Nightwish's music, where can I find music from similar bands?

A: Pay a visit to our message board, there you will find many posts in our Other Music section about different bands that Nightwish fans enjoy. You will find that they have varied tastes in music and most likely you will find a recommendation somewhere among them that is suited to your musical preferences. Or you can pay a visit to our affiliates, Sonic Cathedral or Beyond Ear Candy, and listen to their internet radio stations. There is a wide variety of bands to listen to on there as well.

Q: When will the next Nightwish album be released?

A: As of this writing (February 2010), the band has released an MCD of the Dark Passion Play tour entitled Made in Hong Kong (And Other Various Places). The MCD features an audio CD of live songs from the tour, and a tour documentary DVD. We have recently posted news on our website that the latest tentative release date for a new album will not be until autumn 2011. We will update this site with current news when we get it, so keep checking back here frequently.
