Q: Who/what is Nightwish?
A: Nightwish are a symphonic/melodic metal band with female and male vocals, 4 of the 6 members being from Finland; the other two hailing from The Netherlands and from the UK. The current lineup includes: Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards/songwriting), Floor Jansen (female vocals), Emppu Vuorinen (guitars), Marco Hietala (bass/male vocals), Kai Hahto (drums), and Troy Donockley (pipes). Former members include Sami Vanska (bass, 1998-2001), Tarja Turunen (female vocals, 1996-2005), Anette Olzon (female vocals, 2007-2012), and Jukka Nevalainen (drums, 1996-2014). If you are literally just hearing of Nightwish for the first time via this website, you may download samples of their songs or buy merchandise at their official website. There is currently a remix of the band's "Kiteen Pallo" theme on their website as well.

Q: Where can I find a copy of the book written about Nightwish?
A: An English version of Once Upon a Nightwish by Mape Olilla has been published by the company Bazillion Points here in the U.S. and is available there for purchase.

Q: Has Nightwish ever performed in North America, and will they be back?
A: Yes, Nightwish has toured both Canada and Mexico since the early days of their career. However, they did not reach American soil until 2003, headlining the ProgPower music festival in Atlanta, Georgia. The following year the band embarked on their first official U.S. tour. They did not return again until fall 2007, kicking off the Dark Passion Play tour in the U.S. They returned three more times, in the spring and fall of '08, and the spring of '09, before wrapping up the tour in September of 2009. Their more recent shows in North America were two shows in the Los Angeles area: a secret show at Hollywood's Key Club on January 19th, 2012, under the pseudonym Rubber Band of Wolves; then the Imaginaerum tour officially began two days later with the band's first-ever large stage show in the U.S. when they played the Gibson Amphitheater on January 21st, 2012. The 2012 tour brought them back to North America starting on September 12th in Atlanta, GA; ending the North American tour in Lake Buena Vista, FL on October 14th, 2012 (during the tour, the band switched singers from Anette Olzon to Floor Jansen). They also played in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean; starting November 28th with 2 shows in Mexico City; with a stop in San Juan, Costa Rica before wrapping up in San Jose, Puerto Rico on December 3rd. In 2015, the Endless Forms Most Beautiful tour began in New York City on April 9th, and ended a month later on May 15th in Silver Springs, Maryland. The band returned one more time in 2016, starting February 18th in Sayreville, New Jersey and ending in Tampa, Florida on March 23rd. As to when the band will return to North America, they will be kicking off their Decades tour in Atlanta, GA on March 9th, 2018. You can go to our Forever Moments section to find out where to purchase tickets.

Q: Where can I buy Nightwish merchandise in North America?
A: There used to be a time when Nightwish merchandise was scarce in the U.S., but nowadays domestic releases are fairly easy to find. We have a link to the music merchandise store Rockabilia in our Dark Chest of Wonders section; they are not affiliated with OSA and we only link them because many OSAers have used their services and rate them as a top-quality store for finding good Nightwish merchandise.

Q: Is Nightwish a Christian band?
A: There are many Biblical and religious metaphors within the songs, but no bandmember has outwardly proclaimed a Christian agenda within the music. Their current album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, contains lyrical content addressing evolution and science, and included a guest appearance from famed scientist Richard Dawkins. Bandmembers Troy Donockley and Tuomas Holopainen have also created a video for the Openly Secular campaign, a non-profit organization which seeks to "eliminate discrimination and increase acceptance by getting secular people to be open about their beliefs".

Q: Can I meet the band?
A: During the U.S. legs of the Dark Passion Play , Imaginaerum, and Endless Forms Most Beautiful tours, there was an option to obtain VIP passes for an extra fee when purchasing tickets, which meant fans could attend a meet-and-greet with the band either before or after the show. However, if you cannot afford the extra price for VIP tickets, you can always take a chance of getting to the venue early or staying late after the show in the hopes of running into someone in the band outside the venue. However, this is not a guaranteed method; OSA nor the band themselves condone this as a guaranteed method, so if you want a sure-fire way to meet the bandmembers, your best bet is to purchase VIP meet-and-greet tickets.

Q: Where can I go to watch Nightwish videos?
A: Most of the band's videos have been officially released on their DVDs, but for those videos that didn't make it on the DVDs, you can view them on sites such as YouTube. Some Nightwish videos were also premiered in the summer of '10 on the program Movies & Music in the Morning on the Reelz Channel cable television network before the show was cancelled a few months later.

Q: Are the members of Nightwish married or have children?
A: Personal questions such as this can be answered by reading the bandmember bios on their official site.

Q: I really like the music of Nightwish, where can I find music from similar bands?
A: Pay a visit to our message board, there you will find many posts in our Other Music section about different bands that Nightwish fans enjoy. You will find that they have varied tastes in music and most likely you will find a recommendation somewhere among them that is suited to your musical preferences. Or you can pay a visit to our affiliates, Sonic Cathedral , Nightwish Radio, or Beyond Ear Candy, and listen to their internet radio stations. There is a wide variety of bands to listen to on there as well.

Q: When will the next Nightwish album be released?
A: As of this writing (September 2016), the most recent album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, was released in March 2015. Several recent interviews have hinted that the band plans to have a new album out by sometime in 2018, but there have been no official dates given at this time, as the band is still touring to promote the Endless Forms Most Beautiful album until October of 2016. On November 4th, 2016, the band will release a DVD of the tour, entitled Vehicle of Spirit. From there, the band will be taking a hiatus in 2017 and plan to return to the studio in 2018. OSA will post updates as soon as we get them, so keep checking back here regularly.
